Brand deals for small creators: a practical guide

Prepare for brand deals with relevant samples, honest audience evidence and clear offer terms. Understand gross pay, performance caps and fees before accepting.

By Swayed MediaPublished Updated 4 min read

A small creator can make a strong case for a brand partnership by showing relevant work, a clear audience and a dependable process. A follower count alone does not show how well you can explain a product or whether your audience fits the brand.

This guide is about preparing and evaluating offers. It is not a list of brands currently hiring, a promise of paid work, or a claim that joining Swayed guarantees campaigns. Swayed is still on the waitlist.

Show fit rather than inflated numbers

Build a small portfolio around the kind of product you understand. Include examples of how you would demonstrate a feature, explain a benefit accurately or show a realistic use case. Clearly label unpaid samples so they do not look like paid customer work.

Present recent native metrics with their platform and dates. A handful of relevant posts is more useful than one outlier framed as your normal result. If you do not have audience-market data, say so; do not guess where your followers live or buy.

Keep your contact route professional and your portfolio easy to scan. You can use a simple page or document now. Swayed's planned creator profile is not currently a live public media-kit builder.

A useful outreach message

Avoid mass messages that only say you love the brand. Offer a specific reason the product fits your audience and one believable creative idea. Link to a relevant example and ask whether the brand is considering sponsored creator work.

For example: “I make short demonstrations for freelance designers. Your task-list feature could fit a video about keeping client actions in one place. Here is an unpaid sample in a similar style. Are you commissioning creator posts in this category?” This is an illustrative message, not a promise it will receive a reply.

Do not claim product experience you do not have. If you need a sample or demo account to assess the fit, ask for it before making an endorsement.

Read the offer as a deal, not just a headline

CheckQuestion to ask before accepting
WorkWhat format, account, number of posts and posting window are required?
Gross vs netIs the offered amount gross, and which fees or payout costs reduce it?
PerformanceIs this a fixed fee or a rate against a metric? Is the cap guaranteed or only a maximum?
RevisionsHow many are included and which changes count as new work?
Extra videosAre they allowed, who approves, and do they share the original cap?
BonusWhat exactly earns it, by when, and is it funded?
RightsCan the brand reuse the content, for how long and in which channels?
Review and fundingWhen is the budget placed, when is work approved, and what happens in a disagreement?

Do not accept a vague “up to $1,000” as if it were a $1,000 fixed fee. At $10 per 1,000 eligible views, 50,000 eligible views means $500 gross under a $1,000 cap—not the full maximum.

Calculate your actual take-home

In Swayed's planned model, a 10% creator fee applies to approved earnings. $500 gross leaves $450 before payout costs and your own tax obligations. The brand's separate 5% fee is on top of creator spend, not a deduction from the offered gross amount.

A scheduled payout release also differs from bank receipt. Check account eligibility, approval status and any disclosed payout costs. Read how creator payments work and test CPM-only examples with the calculator.

Protect the working relationship

Keep the accepted scope and changes in writing. If a brand wants another deliverable, agree whether it is a included make-good or new work before filming. Preserve the relevant order version, source observations and review decisions in case a disagreement needs evidence.

For US-targeted endorsements, read the FTC's disclosure guidance and make the sponsorship clear. Product statements should reflect your genuine experience rather than a script requiring unsupported praise.

Where Swayed is headed

We are building creator offers that make the deliverables, gross amount, fee split and funding state visible before acceptance. The planned product does not impose a fixed follower minimum, but brands still choose based on fit and no creator is guaranteed offers.
